Jeep plans trailhead charger network to coincide with 2021 Wrangler 4xe launch
Delivering a whopping 49 mpg and 21 miles of all-electric range, the 2021 Jeep Wrangler 4xe — the brand’s first plug-in hybrid — is definitely a game-changing vehicle for Jeep and off-roading in general. But one big question that’s probably puzzling Jeep owners is: if you’ve got a plug-in Jeep with the capability to take on the great outdoors, where in the great outdoors can you plug it in?
To help expand clean, green, all-electric driving to more places, Jeep recently announced a plan to erect EV charging stations at off-road trailheads around the nation. Partnering with charging station manufacturer Electrify America, Jeep hopes to have dozens of EV Level 2 charging stations installed at popular off-roading spots in the next 12 months.
Iconic off-roading trails Moab, Rubicon Trail and Big Bear will be the first to get the chargers, with Jeep 4xe owners receiving free charging from those stations via the Jeep app. The chargers will either be connected to the power grid or will use solar power to generate the needed electricity.
Jeep made the announcement about the new trailhead chargers at their annual Easter Jeep Safari in Moab, Utah. The trailhead chargers will deliver 240-volt charging, which can fully recharge the Wrangler 4xe’s 17 kilowatt-hour battery pack from zero juice in about two hours. For 4xe owners just looking to top off before heading onto the trail, recharge times will be much shorter.
“Electrification opens a new chapter in the Jeep brand story, and it brings an entirely new level of excitement and enjoyment to our enthusiastic owners,” said Christian Meunier, Jeep Brand Chief Executive Officer. “Key to making Jeep brand the greenest SUV brand is assuring our owners can enjoy the benefits of electric propulsion wherever they go, including the most iconic off-road trails in the country.”
